"Daylight Struggles" by Lemon Boy
ReviewA year after the unveiling of a more happy-go-lucky Lemon Boy with his "Lucky Luke" release, he's back with "Daylight Struggles" which as the very title suggests, is not quite as jaunty in theme.
The first aspect which appeals to me is the fine tension generated by telling a darker story over a ukulele arrangement: it's not what people tend to use that for is it?
And it is very much a narrative, told in a very storyteller mode. If the relationship between music & lyrical content is tense then this is ideal for reflecting the interaction between the two protagonists: a spontaneous elopement leads to a road trip on which their compatibility is questioned & tested to destruction.
Though an ultimate failure, one can't really fault either: ultimately there is no bad guy here (though the male character does cross a number of lines in his obsession), it was an experiment carried out in relatively good faith and the outcome was one both parties should have foreseen as a possibility. Manipulation & credulity are not great qualities & thankfully no-one gets hurt here though in real life, similar circumstances do end up much worse. I suppose it revolves around the nature of risk taking: do you shun this to prevent bad outcomes or is it worth it in pursuit of achieving potential beneficial ones? A pretty universal question really & one which should chime with listeners. The female character in particular demonstrates that even disappointing endings to these adventures can teach valuable lessons & build greater resilience and empowerment. As well as being a bit more careful about getting into a car with a stranger. Not necessarily the initial plan maybe but compensatory achievements.
As I say, the tone of delivery is lighter than the content which is rather a charming effect & I suppose that you could enjoy the song at a lower level than Luke intended as it's a hummable one to be sure: though the words are so prominent that this would require a lot of selectivity of listening. Equally if it had ended as grimly as it seemed for the merest moment that it might, I wouldn't be writing quite like this. I am not sure Luke would have wanted to go any darker though. Did I enjoy it? Yes I very much did.
"Daylight Struggles" lends itself very easily to visual representation so it's no big surprise that an accompanying video is in production for you to look forwards to.
