"Not Quite" by Trust Club

Review

And in a flash, the second single from the upcoming Trust Club EP (‘Slump') is upon us. Ten days after "All I Can Do", we now have "Not Quite" to enjoy too.

Perhaps the Trust Club track with the longest pedigree, it dates back to their earliest days and you may recollect (I hope that you do) that you heard a live version on their 2022 ‘Live' EP. At the time, I felt that it shared some of the grungy sound of "Untelligent Behaviour" and some of the "power pop/punk bop" of "Friend" "with a little light Britpop thrown in".

Thus it moves us on from the glorious purer power pop of its immediate predecessor into "..the heavier and darker side of Trust Club" which they feel distinguishes the songs on this EP from those recorded at the same sessions & which came out on their ‘This is Trust Club' EP  last autumn.

The band wrote the songs & possess the privilege of distinguishing between them (and each one has its distinction): I detect a possible journey towards the dark side via each successive single release in this batch, yet nevertheless, this aspect does not equate to inaccessibility: Trust Club have a knack (a little 1970s power pop reference for you) for infectious, melodic songs, even if many of them are coated with sharp spikes.

Once again, you'd best delve into this track while it has your sole attention: the follow-up is out in a week….
